Blog EntryAsk {*}: Importing iPhoto libraryJul 3, '08 3:30 PM
for everyone
As previously mentioned, I'm restoring data from a crashed PowerMac G5 with Tiger (10.4.x) to a new Mac Pro with Leopard. As part of this, I'm trying to restore my iPhoto library.

I first tried a simple import, but it copies all the thumbnails and originals as if they were separate images, which of course is worse than no import at all.

I then tried copying the old library into ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library and then starting iPhoto, in the hopes it would update the library format. No dice: it claims it's corrupt.

Any ideas?

Tried googling, but didn't find anything. The one suggestion I did find was the one I tried (replacing the library with the old one to trick it into updating the format).

Problem with importing the originals: They're scattered in zillions of subfolders (I have a pretty extensive image library going back almost ten years), and that would lose my notes and attributes.

Ouch.

Which is why I never take the time to do any of that stuff. ;)

cool. Good luck.

Well, it imported most of the photos OK (all 6,114 of them), but unfortunately lost nearly all the titles and tags. Still, better than having to pick through the subfolders and so on.

Some of the photos were damaged, though -- no idea why. I did have a backup of them, but not in full resolution -- you might know, most of the busted ones were from last Christmas. :-/

Cheers,

Ethelred
