On my shiny new Mac Pro with Leopard, I copied over my old apps (especially Creative Suite version 1) -- most of which are in fact still PPC apps.

I have the oddity that if I double-click, for example, a Photoshop CS file, Photoshop will start up, but won't open the file. Dragging and dropping the file's icon onto the Photoshop icon in the Dock also doesn't work. But if I open files with the Open... command in Photoshop, it works fine.

The other CS apps work fine; Freehand MX works fine. So it's not a problem of them being PPC apps. Photoshop also otherwise works normally.

If I'm in InDesign CS, go to the Links window, select a linked image, and click on the Edit icon, again Photoshop starts and comes to the foreground, but the file doesn't open.

Any idea for what's causing this?

Blog EntryAsk {*}: Importing iPhoto libraryJul 3, '08 3:30 PM
for everyone
As previously mentioned, I'm restoring data from a crashed PowerMac G5 with Tiger (10.4.x) to a new Mac Pro with Leopard. As part of this, I'm trying to restore my iPhoto library.

I first tried a simple import, but it copies all the thumbnails and originals as if they were separate images, which of course is worse than no import at all.

I then tried copying the old library into ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library and then starting iPhoto, in the hopes it would update the library format. No dice: it claims it's corrupt.

Any ideas?

Blog EntryAsk {{*}}: Problems with video conferencingSep 10, '07 12:26 PM
for everyone
On occasion I video conference with my parents using iChat on my end (Mac OS X) and AIM Pro on their end (Windows XP SP2). Everything seemed to be OK and work fine, but recently we've repeatedly had the problem that they can see and hear me, but I can't see them and sometimes can't even hear them.

We also tried Skype -- same problem.

The camera on their end is definitely on and plugged in -- my mom can see herself in the preview window -- but I either get a black screen in Skype or just the generic icon instead of her video. Her preferences do say to share video with callers automatically, so that's not the issue, and I'm in her contact list.

In iChat and AIM, sometimes her buddy icon is shown as having audio only, sometimes video, but either way I can't see her and usually can't hear her.

On my end I've tried two different Macs -- same problem. We both turned off our firewalls as well. No difference.

Anybody have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I'm stumped.
